“Tough times don’t last, but tough people do because when you get to the bottom, there’s only one place to go…UP”.
Profound words from the Chief investment expert himself, Mr. Bismarck Rewane, during my courtesy visit to his office. For a man who has been there and done that as far as Nigeria’s economic affairs are concerned, Mr. Rewane’s humility is simply, astounding.
As I sit before him, listening with keen interest to his perspective on the Nigerian Real Estate Industry, his neatly coifed curls tell me of a man, who although is very conversant with the innovations of the 21st Century, has decided to hoard along the grace and essence of the old.
Although, our chance meeting on a Lufthansa Frankurt bound flight from Lagos, for a few minutes quickly established his humility, it did not give me enough time to drink from this well of wisdom and experience.
Towards the end of our meeting, a correspondent from Bloomberg called for a quick interview. Mr Rewane launched into an analysis of Nigeria’s current situation. Despite the need for economic jargons and vocabulary, this unscripted genius launches into a well-articulated analysis of our macro-economic situation using day-to-day examples like animal husbandry to explain factors affecting the economy on all fronts; from agriculture to finance.
Mr. Rewane’s unflinching objectivity and optimism hit me when in response to what I assumed was the Reporter’s perspective on Nigeria’s current recession, he stated emphatically; “When you get to the bottom, there’s only one place to go…up”.
