“In the summer of 2008, our company faced a pivotal moment. We needed to secure a significant funding round, but the financial system collapsed, and that lifeline slipped through our fingers. It was a dark hour. We scrambled, piecing together whatever resources we could find—myself and existing investors pulling together. We managed to complete a financing round, just barely enough to keep the company afloat. ~ Elon Musk
The Sujimoto Group, known as the authority and leading provider of luxury real estate in Nigeria and Africa; pain, difficulties, and calamities are the stumbling blocks that pushed me to where it is today. It’s been 10 years since I moved back to Nigeria and started Sujimoto. Although a lot of friends advised me to Japa to America because it was easier for me as I had a green card, on the contrary, the entrepreneurial spirit in me chose to fulfil the Nigerian dream.
I changed all the foreign currencies I had then at N205 per Euro, a time when the dollar sat at 160 against the naira, with the hope that Buhari was coming into power to revamp the economic situation and put a full stop to our biggest enemy, “corruption.” But it didn’t happen, as for the past 10 years, all I’ve seen are difficulties and barricades of entrepreneurial pain, but amidst these calamities, God showed his face to rescue me.
My biggest dream, the Lorenzo project, got destroyed because of the economic drawbacks in the nation. Investors who promised us a 50% capital injection pulled the last straw that broke the camel’s back, bringing our ambitious project to a halt, but still, that didn’t stop my dream.
It’s been hard to keep going, as every 20th of every month is one of my worst nightmares because I MUST pay salaries to over 600 staff working at Sujimoto, but somehow the Almighty shows up when we least expect it.
Today the naira is at 1700 to 1 dollar, fueling a myriad of difficulties that have painted the whole nation red, but I have a new belief system that wealth is located in sh!t. I see huge opportunities everywhere across the nation, and I know that the God of Dangote and Adenuga will not let us down at Sujimoto, not even for a second.
God bless every dogged entrepreneur out there who has gone through the crumbs of difficulty.
